Japanese-Style Gardens of the Pacific West Coast
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (June, 2003)
Authors: Melba Levick and Kendall H. Brown
Average review score:

Are Japanese Gardens in the U.S. fakes?
Kendall H. Brown begins his history of Japanese-style gardens with a quote from James Rose to the effect that Japanese gardens outside of Japan are fakes. Brown's attitude is, however, more ambiguous than ambivalent. He seldom says he doesn't like something. His liking may be found between the lines. At the end of his history, Brown concludes that Japanese-style gardens are meant for play. It is pleasant to think of people having a smiling time in Japanese-style gardens . . . the wistaria, azalea, carp and waterfalls call for that. Nevertheless, Japanese in Japan are as out of touch with their past traditions as are Americans with their's. There is pleasure in knowing the symbolic uses of gardens in Japan and in their transplanted versions in the United States. Gardens in both countries should be more creative as is the case with "California Scenario" by Isamu Noguchi, the last garden Brown describes. (It is popular with skateboarders!) "Japanese-Style Gardens of the Pacific Coast" is a splendid book and the only book extant that gives the historical background of West-Coast Japanese-style gardens. Melva Levick's photographs whet the desire to see the gardens, if for no other reason than to see which is better . . . the photographs or the gardens. A small objection: If Brown had included acreages, one might be better able to compare the problems and successes of the individual gardens.

Beautiful work
This book is one of the few books on US Japanese-style gardens which compares and contrasts the real gardens of Japan with efforts to recreate the essence of their beauty in the western US. Beautiful Photos

The Life and Hard Times of a Korean Shaman: Of Tales and the Telling of Tales
Published in Hardcover by University of Hawaii Press (April, 1988)
Author: Laurel Kendall
Average review score:

Interesting study of folk culture
The story of "Yongsu's Mother" is compelling, informative, and thought-provoking at the same time. Yongsu's Mother clearly enjoys telling her stories, and has developed a flair for the dramatic (at the expense of accuracy from time to time it appears). I read this book for a class on East Asian folklore, and while I realize Yongsu's Mother is not the archetypal shaman, her experiences shed light on not only Korean shamans, but Koreans in general.

The most interesting part of the book, besides the stories, is Kendall's struggle to ascertain the accuracy of Yongsu's Mother's stories. Yongsu's Mother is presumably not deliberately lying to Kendall, but instead exhibiting a fundamental human paradox: the past, presumably done with and set in stone, is made fluid by the human mind and memory. The point is not that Yongsu's Mother's variations destroy her credibility, but rather that the variations give insight into her, and presumably her culture's, psyche.

This was a wonderful book ... don't be scared off by the title: this is not a book specifically about religion, but a biography about a woman who happens to be a shaman. 5 out of 5 stars.

Fascinating Reading Material, but not comprehensive
This is an exhiliarating account of the life of a Korean Shaman, and her interesting life in modern Korea. It is fun to read just for pleasure and it's interesting. Because it is a case study, it does not necessarily purport to be representative of all Korean Shamans, but nevertheless it teaches a lot about Korea in this century.

Mark Twain & me, Mikey T

Great adventures-of-youth story.
This book claims to be about a modern-day Tom Sawyer, and I was delighted to find out that that was absolutely true! Just as Twain wrote Tom Sawyer to remind adults how to be kids again, this book reminds our children of today's video games, etc. that they can still have real adventures. It is a quick read and includes a lot of cool information about Mark Twain. The models of different types of writing are an added bonus. This is an excellent book for "children" of all ages!

A great book of adventure stories. It has a lot of writing
This book is about Mikey Thompson of Hannibal, Missouri. It has a lot of things about Mark Twain, who I really like. What I really liked too about this book is all the writings such as book report, editorial, letter writing, and essays, too. I use it in my classroom. my teacher really liked it, too

I loved this book
I'm hooked. I felt like I was there throughout the entire book. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fun and exciting adventure. I'm off to buy Miranda Goes to Hollywood!

I love this book!
This is one of my favorite children's books ever! It's funny, and silly, and slightly romantic, though not in a mushy way. Here's the basic plot: 12 year old Miranda Louis Gaines is bored. And I mean BORED! The other girls only like dolls, and so she plays with the boys (unthinkable to the well brought up ladies of the neighborhood, btu it's fine with her aunt). School's almost over, and her summer fun will begin, or should begin. On day, she overhears that new people are moving in next door. She dreams of meeting them until she hears the news: they aren't just any people; they're ACTORS! Strictly forbidden! She promises not to go talk to them, but what's the harm in eavesdropping from a tree? To make it short, Miranda gets involved with the American Moving Picture Company, and everything going's fine until the day of her birthday, when she goes with her aunt Lucy into New York...

Excellent review of social externalities of pork
As a hog odor researcher, I found this book to be a very valuable resource. Excellent selection of discussions regarding the often neglected social aspects in the evolution of the hog industry from some of the "hidden" players in the pork industry, that is sociologists, anthropologists, community leaders, conscientious politicians, and some local farmers.

Public Relations Campaign Strategies: Planning for Implementation
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins College Div (January, 1992)
Author: Robert Leon Kendall
Average review score:

Bob Kendall's PR Campaign Strategies
Professor Kendall, recently retired from active teaching at the University of Florida, crafted an excellent text for those serious about a systematic approach to meeting an organization's public relations goals. Dr. Kendall includes research methods and case studies to aid the PR practitioner in conducting a campaign and the student in understanding how effective public relations ought to be conducted. As an ex-student of Dr. Kendall and a contributer of a small case study he included in his 2nd edition, I am pleased this book has received favor in the public relations community.

Applied Public Relations
Robert Kendall was absolutely superb in applying many of the basic concepts of public relations to actual campaign implementation strategies. His Public Relations Campaign Strategies, a book devoted entirely to the RACE model of public relations with which all PR majors are familiar, teaches those pursuing a career in public relations how to put the basic and the not-so-basic concepts of the model to practice. While emphasizing the important role research plays in PR campaign planning, implementation, and evaluation without condemning creativity, Kendall created a guide that should be on the desk or bookshelf of every working practitioner of public relations. And as if these weren't enough, Kendall provides case studies to bring his concepts to life. To say the least, Public Relations Campaign Strategies is fun, educational, and applyable reading.

GREAT BOOK!
As a reading teacher I found this book to be very helpful in teaching strategies such as comprehension, vocabulary, fluency. . . BUT I think that this book is MUCH more VALUABLE to a content teacher. It shows you how to introduce reading skills for text books. Often, content teachers do not know why a student isn't succeeding in his/her class. Often it is because the student cannot read the text book. This book will show you how to introduce strategies so that your students will do well in your class! This is for ALL secondary teachers!

How do you help students read and comprehend the extensive content presented in text books? Buy this book!! The authors have compiled an outstanding collection of research-based strategies organized in a clear, straightforward format. Chapters include student lessons on: Building Vocabulary, Comprehending Text, Supporting Struggling Readers, Reading Critically, Study Skills, Test Preparation, and Conducting Research.
